When the former Yugoslavia separated in 1992, intense violence rooted in ethno-religious disagreement erupted. The violence, labelled as the Bosnian War, culminated in the Dayton Accords in 1995. Over 100,000 people died during the war, and the region suffered extensive physical destruction.
