On November 9, 1989, Germans on both sides of the Berlin Wall celebrated at the Brandenburg Gate as the Berlin Wall came down. The Iron Curtain and Berlin Wall served as the ideological and physical boundaries that separated Warsaw Pact countries in the 'East' and NATO-aligned countries in the 'West' throughout the Cold War. After peaceful mass protests across the Eastern Bloc, the Iron Curtain finally fell in 1989, ushering a new era in European history.
