Although his main opponent Hillary Clinton won the popular vote (Clinton at 48% and Trump at 45.9%), President Trump amassed more Electoral College votes, securing him the position of President of the United States. For some Europeans, this added to growing concern about the rise of populist and Alt-Right movements.
