On December 1, 1990, French and British workers shook hands in the newly constructed 'Eurotunnel' which connected England and France by land. Queen Elizabeth and French president François Mitterrand ceremonially opened the tunnel on May 6, 1994. Colloquially referred to as the "chunnel,' the underground passageway allows for rail and automotive travel between the UK and the European continent. Since its construction, it has allowed people to travel between the regions with facility and speed.
