In 2018, the European Parliament voted not to enforce Article 7 procedures against Hungary, in light of the country's increasing restrictions on democratic freedoms. Article 7 is often called the "nuclear option" and considered one of the EU's most serious political sanctions. It allows the EU to suspend a country's right to vote on EU decisions, which many Europeans saw as the necessary response to Hungary's de-democratisation.
